There’s a movie based on Battleship — so why not adapt any of these 12 board games as well?

We put together a dozen fake posters for board game movies we’d like to see — as well as plot summaries and casting suggestions for each flick. (For Connect 4: “In Connect III, Reg Caldwell pulled one last job and thought he was out of the life for good. He was wrong. Again. With only four bullets in the chamber, he takes on syndicate boss Milton Bradley (William Fitchner), who has kidnapped Caldwell’s sister. Luckily, sis (Gina Carano) is known to be pretty sneaky herself.”)

We are shaped by the light we let shine through us!

I’m taking a break from all my usual cat videos and jokes I post to get a little personal here.

Last Friday, I lost a good friend. I won’t use his name, or go into the details of his death, but it was an unexpected, accidental thing. If you know me personally, we can talk, but out of respect, it’s not right to put it out there for the whole internet to see.

I’ve been good friends with his family for years, but I really only got to know him within the last two years. He was honestly one of the most outgoing people I’ve ever met. He could make a friend with anyone, and he always had a joke, a story, and a quick-witted comeback to anything dished out at him. He was always one of the first people to send me a well-wishing text on holidays, and he would frequently thank me, my brother, and my parents for being good, supportive friends. He bent over backwards to be there for friends and family, even when they pushed away due to things that happened a long time ago.

It’s been almost a week since he passed, and it’s been too surreal to sink in for me. For a few days, I kept thinking that the call I got from his parents Sunday morning was just a weird dream. Seriously, more than once, I got out my phone and looked at the call log to make sure that it happened. I’ve read and re-read texts and stared blankly at Facebook statuses about him. I’m on the other side of the country now, so I wasn’t able to be at his services; he was buried today. I talked to my mom and brother a few hours ago, and they described the visitation and funeral Mass, along with all the overwhelming support from friends and family. That’s when it started to hit me, but I have a feeling that it won’t really all sink in until I get home next month.

After I talked to my mom about his funeral earlier, I needed to occupy my mind with something, so I got out a book I’ve been reading, The Orphaned Anything’s, by Stephen Christian. It’s reminding me a lot of The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, one of my favorite books. Anyway, I started reading it where I left off a couple days ago, and sure enough, there was a passage that gave me something to think about in this whole situation.

…she then quoted me something i will never forget for the rest of my existence. she said that this catharsis for me reminded her of a muslim man by the name of rumi once said:

“when you are dead, seek for your resting place not on the earth, but in the hearts of men.”

The reason I’m writing this post is not for pity or sympathy, just that you’ll learn what I’ve learned over the past week:

  • Think about this quote from The Orphaned Anything’s. Be a positive influence on other people so that you make a good impression on them. Then, you’ll truly be remembered. I know that my friend had no problem making a positive impression on me and many others around him.

  • Forgive people. Can’t emphasize that enough. There’s a reason Jesus told us to. Not forgiving will only leave you with regret. By no means am I a pro at it, but I’m trying to be better.

  • Listen to his last Facebook status, posted the morning he died. Knowing that he passed with these positive thoughts on his mind has made it much easier on me. His post: “WE ARE SHAPED BY THE LIGHT WE LET SHINE THROUGH US! … GOD IS GRRRRRRREEEEEEAAAAAATTTTTTT!!!!” I’m going to do my best to live by that.

Makes me laugh every time. If you don’t read Married to the Sea, get on it. You’re seriously missing out.

This awesome creature (yes, this really is a living thing, not a piece of candy or glass) is a Jewel Caterpillar (Acraga coa) spotted by naturalist and photographer Gerardo Aizpuru near Cancun, Mexico. No word if it tastes like a gummi worm, but we’ll let you take the first bite. Here’s Gerardo’s own description:

“Photo take in a mangrove area , found this Stoning translucent caterpillar lay on a Red Mangrove tree leaf this morning early. Just can believe there is some species like this around the world. looks like made of glass whit small red mushroom inside every pic. about 3 cm long.”

The bottom image, as you might’ve surmised, shows the bright and impressively furry moth that this wicked little caterpillar eventually becomes. Transforming from one sort of awesome creature into another different, but still entirely awesome, creature? We’re seriously impressed.

Nature is awesome.

This just made me smile.
